The contribution of tourism in the Spanish economy is very important. It favours the Spanish balance of payments, and increases foreign exchange flows to achieve a positive balance in reserve funds. Business organizations in general, and hotel and leisure sector in particular, today, more than ever, are going through an uncertain period of change, of complex and growing competitiveness, of economic downturn, of social crisis, etc. Therefore, highly qualified professionals and specific training are needed more than ever to access certain jobs and meet the requirements of the Hotel industry today, so as to optimally achieve an effective management.
Despite the difficulties that we are presently living through, tourism is the strategic sector par excellence and, as such, it is considered in many countries and also in Spain. The University is aware of the current problem and has been involved in looking for tools and models for action, to be more competitive while being innovative and creative, to capture emerging markets that are emerging with the new ways of life, work and leisure.
In this situation, the University cannot be alien to the business sector, and is involved in the development of research and training programs, as in the case of the Master in Hotel Management delivered at the ICE of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. This type of specialized course for postgraduate students, born in 1980, is a Postgraduate training and professionalizing program. At the same time, it is a project for present and future times, where the main concern has always been, since the beginning, to specialise professionals in the area of management and direction of hotel establishments. The program from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid has followed a continuous review and updating since its origin, matching the needs of the sector of the moment. Today, it comprises a syllabus of updated contents, with a broad board of teachers from different schools of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and other universities, as well as professionals and specialists of different subjects, linked to the Hotel sector, which meet the expectations of the participants and prospective employers.
